*I have worked with both styrofoam mannequins and real deer in the past. Currently I am working with real taxidermied deer, found or donated / given to me.

There is a feeling you get when working with the remains of animals, the remains of a life.  As I "remake" the animals into fantastical creatures,  my hands in contact with the fur and skin and horn, I am often overwhelmed with feeling for the creatures, for what their life was like and what their life, and death, represent in my hands. The spirit lingers as does the majesty, beauty and gentleness of their spirits. I processed the time in contact with each animal, which felt often like being in a trance, as a reciprocal channel of energy and intention, given and received. (This all may sound mad. I'm sure that I sound crazy to some - frankly I don't care.)  I asked each of the animals for forgiveness for how we humans have treated them on this planet. This act of asking for forgiveness has become a meditation in my work, and is meant for the deer as well as for all the animals of the world.

We must all do this, say we are sorry, and often, to begin to heal our man-made rift with mother nature, as we live through the mass exticntion we are causing and living through.  The work of placing each sequin on a form by hand is a meditation and requires discipline and focus. It is good training and quiets the mind.

My work often explores transitory states... the energy in the potential during the act of becoming. The deer are in the act of becoming something else - a dragon, a bird, a lizard, a serpent, for example - transforming alchemically, and spiritually. My goal is to honor the life that was taken and to give them an exalted beauty, clad in metallic armor, for the ethereal plane, one sequin at a time.
